It's a bit hard to get noticed in all the mayhem of the Burning Man festival, so Linsday Lawlor did what any other self respecting engineer would do and built himself a 17-foot tall robotic giraffe. Named Rave Raffe, the huge robot runs off of three 450-amp batteries that are charged by a 12-horsepower propane engine. The whole unit can run for about 8 hours at Raffe's top walking speed: 1 mile per hour. The 1700 pound robot has a pneumatic powered 8-foot neck, 40 strobe lights, 400 LEDs and a killer speaker system. The bot walks by moving two of its wheeled legs forward at a time, and then locking them with hydraulic brakes while the other two shuffle ahead.

The goal of Stanford University Media X is to foster collaborations between industry and academia. The 5th Annual Media X Conference on Research, Collaboration, Innovation and Productivity, which I was fortunate to attend, served its purpose well. Let me share the 10 Key Trends that every business executive and innovator should be paying attention to:

1) Personal Robotics is poised to explode soon (predicted by Paul Saffo). It usually takes 20 years science basic science exists until applications reach inflection point and take the world by storm-and we are about to see that happen. Some indicators: DARPA sponsored first robotics attempts in mid-80s, and now we have applications such as the Roomba vacuum-cleaner, and a fully automated racing car. Prof. Kenneth Salisbury showed how there are robots today with great motor skills-i.e., they can unload a dishwasher!

2) Brain Computer Interfaces. Prof. Krishna Shenoy explained how, for many people who can't move/ communicate well, new systems enable the translation of brain signals into control signals, by implanting electrodes in brain that measure signals and help predict behaviors based on response pattern recognition There are already applications today that help people move cursors based on their thoughts.

3) Clean Technology: Scott Z. Burns, co-producer of An Inconvenient Truth, explained how Al Gore was reluctant to make the movie, but he was convinced to participate given the increasing threat of global warming. Al Gore saw an analogy between the movie and a bio-feedback device that her daughter used to treat her migraines. In biofeedback, one learns how to manage vital body variables in order to reach a goal (preventing migraines, managing stress...). Similarly, Gore wanted each viewer to find his or her own "levers" or "muscles" and ways to act -not just be told what to do.

4) Reinventing Aging: Prof. Laura L. Carstensen, of the Stanford Center on Longevity, explained how Technology & Science has been improving Biology for the last 150 years, and now we need to focus on how to help people remain physically fit and mentally sharp as we age. We need to redefine "aging". Nowadays, there are many role models in their 70s and 80s that show how age is not an obstacle for being active contributors in society.

5) Virtual Simulations for medical education. Dr. LeRoy Heinrichs showed how simulations work very well to train surgeons and other medical professionals learn how to perform their jobs. Virtual simulations (in a simulated virtual environment) can work as well as physical ones (which typically are more expensive and less scalable).

6) Green Building and Green Cars. Prof. Gilbert M. Masters recommended reading the article "It's the Architecture, Stupid!" to understand how buildings account for 35-45% carbon emissions in the US, more than transportation and industry.

7) Friends not Email: Prof. B.J. Fogg claimed that email "cheapens our lives" and insisted that maintaining close relationships is critical for happiness. Email is a very bad tool to manage close relationships. Wise words.

8) Science Videos: Prof. Roy D. Pea made the case that there is an increasing need for DIY videos in protocol sharing among scientists, so they can better replicate experiments. His Lab is creating new ways to enable people create conversations about video to enhance diversity of views and connections.

9) Games for Learning: Prof. Dan Schwartz showcased new methods for learning outside the classroom. Games can help merge formal & informal learning. Teachable agents are computer programs created by students to make their knowledge explicit, and can be used as part of games to motivate students do their homework.

10) 3D Scientific Imaging. Prof. Paul Brown displayed some of the new imaging and software packages that allow doctors navigate virtually into the bodies of patients, in a non-invasive way The images are simply spectacular. They used these technologies to see in detail the interiors of an Egyptian mummy.

Once again returning to the approach used in former versions of the game, Ratchet & Clank is out to conquer the PS3 with a bang, beyond anything fans of the series has seen before. The plotline for this game is something that would please true fans of the game as it will trace them back to the origins of Ratchet. The plotline for this game will be something that fans should be looking out for. In Ratchet & Clank Future, the origins of Ratchet will be revealed as well as how he's ended up to be the sole survivor of his race. In the future robots will be side-by-side assistants to humans and will be programmed to interact with even hostile, agitated and rude people. At some point the robotic androids and simulated silicon partners will have to speak up and simply tell the human; “Man you are way out of line!” or “shut up, I get the point, enough of your complaining.”

If robots are not programmed to take control of a deteriorating conversation or interaction then these interactions will promote over bearing behavior and this will be problematic when two actual humans interact with each other you see.

We need to start factoring into our artificial intelligent robots, human behavioral components, which are typical in our present period. If not, one would be interacting with their robotic assistant, which becomes so polite and agreeable that it is able to throw us over the edge to kill the thing; for instance the condescending attitude of a “Yes Man” type, after a while you just want to clock the weak person for always agreeing with you. For true human interaction with robotic assistants to work, they will at some point need to stop mirroring our comments or always agreeing with us. Once in a while they are going to need to speak up for their own rights, otherwise humans will not respect them and thus we all lose. We will lose in their ability to serve man and thus we have wasted our time in building them in the first place. Think on this.

Today, the United States and her allies are working on Robotic Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Robotic Unmanned Ground Vehicles and Robotic Unmanned Underwater and Above Water Vessels. As you are aware we already have sophisticated Electronic Attack systems, Smart Munitions and UAVs in the battlespace assisting manned operations able to strategically and surgically strike our enemy; whether they be insurgents, international terrorists or even rogue nation-states run by radical dictators.

Efficient robotic killing machines combined with state-of-the-art technologies, electronics and a mixture of non-lethal devices will render any enemy useless in battle. Thus, the enemy will either lose their will to fight, their lives or their abilities to move, stay awake or penetrate various zones of the net-centric battlespace.

The only real problem with this entire scenario is that these technologically advanced machines are a double edged sword in that even our most top secret artificially intelligent weapons will also be in the hands of our enemies, who may use them against our own civilian populations. Thus, a fighting force of defense robots will be made to secure our cities, but if they fail, then what.

Indeed, the future of warfare is changing rapidly and human armies will soon be a thing of the past, as robotic arsenals will go to war with one-another to see which political power will remain in control. Our neighbors and fellow species the American Honey Bees have just been having a terrible time over the last decade. Their larva have been battling a virus and now their civilizations are collapsing and thus they can no longer pollinate the crops to make honey. If the Honey Bees help us in pollination by 60% and we ship our excess to feed Africans, well we may not have enough to send to help starving people. What on Earth are we going to do about this crisis?

Well, I propose we make a Robotic Pollination Vacuum Filter Blower Unit Invention. How so you now want to know? Well how about a lightweight cable and a small little blimp that is powered by the by the vacuum inside. As it travels over the plant it will vacuum the pollen into the filter and fly along. Then it will blow the pollen back out as it flies to the next area and the pollen will therefore be blown onto the desired plants that need pollinating.

How much will these things cost? Probably not much actually and of course we are going to have to do something. This project can easily be done at one of the Ag Universities in our nation. There are many forward looking and innovative research and development colleges, which work in this arena of science. We ought to have a contest and fund at least some projects which appear to have a reasonable possibility of solving this challenging situation, which threatens our fellow species and dutiful insect companions. We must protect them and our food supply too.
